John Milne

John Duncan Milne was born on 29th September 1886 in Musselburgh. His parents were George Milne, a Master Grocer and Janet McFarquhar who were married in Inverness in 1885.
In 1906, he matriculated in the Arts Faculty at the University of Glasgow and 3 years later, he graduated with an MA where his studies included subjects as Mathematics, Latin and Logic and in the same year, completed his Teacher Training Certificate. He taught at John Street Higher Grade School and later Maryhill Public School.
He was one of the founding members of the University Officer Training Corps.
On the 1911 census, John was living with his parents at 30 Derby Street in the Sandyford area of Glasgow. His occupation is recorded as Assistant Schoolmaster.
He was killed in February 1917 by a bursting trench mortar while his Battalion was trying to capture Serre.
He is remembered on the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour, the memorial in Wellington Church and on the Inverkip War Memorial although the Inverkip connection remains unknown.
