On 4th September 1914, Robert married Jessie Keir Jack Forbes, a dairymaid from Airdrie. They had two children, Alexander born in 1914 and Margaret (Peggy) born in 1917.

Robert served in the 8th Battalion Black Watch and was killed on 21st March 1918. He is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial and the Inverkip Memorial.

It appears Jessie returned to North Lanarkshire while her husband was on active service. She remarried on 30th December 1923 to Peter Penman. They had 3 children; Helen, Jessie and Janet (Nettie).
